LG Washer SteamWasher Front Load, 4.2 Cu Ft - White Review

LG Washer SteamWasher Front Load, 4.2 Cu Ft - White

After our cheap-o washing machine and dryer broke down, we decided to make a Black Friday purchase and get both the dryer and washing machines from Best Buy. My husband and I researched the heck out of what was available on the market. We compared features, cleaning options, and prices. I came across one site that had over 1700 reviews for this machine alone - the average review was a 5 out of 5.
I could not be happier with the products. While it is true the washing cycle takes longer than a top load washer, the end result is amazingly different. The matching dryer seems to work more efficiently than our old one and makes up for the time difference between loads. My toddlers socks came out white and the dirt stains gone. Even some of the old stains were removed. There are a lot of fancy dials and sounds on the machine however once you get accustomed to the settings, it is very easy to use. The pre-wash and steam features are a nice bonus. I especially like the top area to load the soap and fabric softner. The load capability seems quite large to me. Several pairs of jeans, pants and tops can go in at once. While running, the machine is fairly quiet. This is a beneficial feature since our laundry room is located in the center of our home. Is it wrong to fall in love with an appliance? If so, guilty as charged. Now if only they could automate the folding process I would be in heaven!!

The top cover on these will rust out between the barrel seal and the metal cover, dripping rusty water into your loads every time- ruining your clothes. Absolute junk.

My circa mid-70s top load Maytag which had never seen a repair call began crashing during the spin cycle; apparently what keeps the tub stabilized had worn beyond tolerances or whatever sensed imbalance was going bad. Besides, its 1100 kWh thirst and reliance on about 40 gallons of hot or warm water for a clean wash was starting to work on my green guilt.
After about a month of research, a local big-box store killer sale price with a 24 month no interest payoff got me this new Samsung WF210 three months ago. At 130 kWh and sipping just a few gallons of cold water I might expect it to pay for itself in short order - relative to appliance ownership timelines, of course.
Not paying any attention to this class of appliance for so long, I was quite surprised by the technology. They're not just tubs of sloshing water anymore. Compared to the three push buttons and timer dial of the Maytag, the Samsung's cycle options seem endless. I am amazed that my dirtiest laundry comes out sparkling clean with a cold water HE detergent and no other additives. My washing machine has a microprocessor with firmware Samsung code named... Big Bang! Seriously. Ironic in that this thing is so, so quiet.
I have only two gripes (see my two customer images, too):
First: the slide-out detergent/additive drawer provides a dinky two square inch access for pouring in liquid bleach.
Second: down on the bottom there's a filter that needs (fortunately) periodic maintenance. To remove it, 20 ounces (!) of water must first be siphoned out through a dinky little hose only 1" above the floor. The only way to place a receptacle for that is to the left of the drop down door and if that side of the washer is against a wall (as is mine) that leaves a whole FOUR INCHES of room. Clearly, this draining routine was designed with the accessory pedestal in mind. That's not an option for me, so my procedure is to remove the door and collect the water in an 8" frying pan.
The WF210 has otherwise moved my laundryness into the 21st Century when once my ancestors beat their loincloths against a rock in a cold stream. I have made them proud, no doubt.

What a mistake to buy one of these. We have owned a Model 2688 for three years now. The bearings in the drum are going out, becoming more and more noisy as it spins. When calling repair men I noticed noone worked on LG's. After dealing with customer service I figured out why noone worked on them. The warranty may seem pretty good: 1yr whole machine, 2 yr electronics, 7 yr drum motor, and lifetime on the Stainless steel drum. There are alot of parts not covered, like bearings and tub housings and spiders and....almost $700 worth of parts(according to repair man). When I brought it to Customer Services attention that the machine was barely 3 yrs old, he didn't seem to care. When I asked the repair man to call them, per Customer Service's request, he changed his mind about fixing it. After looking on the internet, I can get the parts for about a third(or less if it doesn't need everything listed) of what I was quoted. I'm not going to deal with LG, I'll fix it myself and LG can stick their warranty. I'll never buy anything with LG wrote on it again.

Whirlpool WTW5700XW WTW5700XW Top Load Washer Review

Whirlpool WTW5700XW WTW5700XW Top Load Washer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Last week we purchased this Cabrio 5700 washer along with a 5600 dryer(non glass front,Great Buy!). We really did not need the washing machine as we have a Maytag conventional 2 years old; however our original GE dryer died and we went ahead and bought anyway because of the fantastic Labor day sales and $100 in rebates from the local power company and State. We do a lot of laundry. We have two young boys who get clothes dirty, quickly and my wife an I also have uniforms that need frequent washing. I am always a skeptic and overly research items, peruse product reviews into the wee hours of the morning, basically become a bit obsessive over the whole deal (per wife).
As I write, I am conducting yet another experiment to see what this thing can handle. It is on the Heavy Duty cycle-Heavy soil-cool water- Deep clean option. I have in the machine, 6 pair of 11 oz canvas hiking pants, 1 pair of bluejeans (all sized 36/34) and two thick Field-n-Stream non lined flannel shirts. The load is up to the top of the stainless tub and the clothes are semi loose, spread around the center. This is a heavy load for clothes and I would not normally load it this thick. Initially the tub fills with the soapy solution and then agitates. The agitator is definitely under some stress as the motion is measurably subdued compared to a normal load of mixed fabrics. The tub fills 3 more times as the cycle progresses. The manual states on the Heavy Duty cycle that it will do this because the recommended fabrics for the cycle absorb more water than normal type loads. Because the machine has a glass top, I am able to observe the whole cycle. Through out the course of the cycle, all of the items eventually make it through the solution a few times. I had my doubts but was proved wrong. This load when wet looked like quite a force to recon with however the machine did as advertised and being able to observe this through the glass top is a real plus.
Whites cycle is excellent!. Bulky cycle handled a queen size thick cotton hand made quilt very well. The water level in the tub on the Bulky setting is quite a lot. I did have to open the lid and even out the quilt due to it having an unbalanced load during the spin cycle. The wet quilt was sooo heavy that this was sort of expected. Not a concern for us. Today I washed 4 washable silk shirts on the delicate cycle and these came out great as well. The delicate cycle also fills up with a higher level of water and agitator speeds are slower. We have put towels through the Heavy Duty cycle and the Whites cycle and have had no issues. No twisting into knots or ripping. FWIW Front load washers are not exempt from tying items into knots! A feature I wish this had is what Whirlpool put into the larger capacity models which is when the load is going through the initial soak down, the basket rotates so all of the load gets saturated. Currently the load makes it through anyways via agitation so this wish is not a deal breaker. I DO recommend this product. If it did not meet my expectations it would have been sent back, Period!

Samsung : WF448AAP 4.5 cu. ft. Steam Front Load Washer - Stainless Platinum Review

Samsung : WF448AAP 4.5 cu. ft. Steam Front Load Washer - Stainless Platinum

We purchased the matching dryer to go with this washer and they are fantastic! They are quiet, fast, and energy efficient. We purchased the drawer bases which give you more storage and raise the machines up waist level so you don't have to bend down when loading and unloading.
The only issue we had was with the brass "Y" included with the steam dryer for the cold water faucet. It leaked, but Samsung sent a replacement the next day!
We gave away an 8 year old set of Maytags that worked, but were both noisy...good ridence! These are so quiet and do a better job cleaning and drying our clothes than any set we have owned before. We have had GE, Kenmore, and Maytag. All good products, but these Samsung products are so far superior, it isn't even funny!
And don't let the "NASA" designed controls fool you, they are very easy to use with preprogrammed settings (e.g. whites, towels, perm press, etc.). And the steam in both the washer and dryer allow you to remove wrinkles and sanitize your clothes. This washer also has the ability to remove 99% of bacteria in cold water using silver ions.
Don't let our 5 star rating and the other person's 1 star rating make up your mind. We researched Consumer Reports and other web sites and read lots of consumer opinions before making our decision. Plus you get an energy credit on your taxes for purchasing these Samsung products!
One recommendation, purchase the extended warranty as these are high tech with digital controls. Ours are protected for 5 years along with a "lemon" warranty. If the other consumer who gave 1 star had purchased this, they could have already replaced the defective unit or got their money back. Although we are suspicious seeing that Samsung give a 1 year warranty and they claim they can't get Samsung to do anything about their washer...so do your research before writing off this product. We highly recommend this washer although it was the most expensive one we researched...worth every dollar!

I didnt quite understand why people complained about the washer tangling clothing and leaving them a wrinkled mess, until i bought a pair, and the dryer 'stopped heating' THREE TIMES. every time we had to call service, i was forced to hang all my clothes- that's when i learned about the wrinkled, tangled mess they become. if you are just whisking the clothing straight in to the dryer, you would hardly notice, but if you hang anything? watch out! ALL of my t-shirts are a stretched mess and can not be worn unless they go through the dryer first (which, at the present time, is yet at again- broken!) i was very, very disappointed. please save yourself the stress.
(the problem with the matching dryer (7.3) is that the gas safety shut off keeps triggering. the dryer seems to think it's over heating, and shuts off the gas to the dryer. the first time this happened, we simply got the machine replaced. the second time, we got it repaired. now i told them to get this hunk of junk out of my house!!!)

We had an old sears 'lady kenmore" that died and this was our replacement machie.
What I like about this machine:
1. The greater rpm on the drum wrings a lot more water out of heavy towels and blue jeans. If you hang dry your laundry this is a very good thing. Towels used to take up to three days to dry (in winter months) now they only take a couple of hours. Clothing will dry in minutes depending on fabric thickness.
2. Laundry seems to come out cleaner.
3. Water and soap consumption are reduced.
4. Machine is quiet
What I sometimes find annoying:
1. Cycles sometimes take forever and the lcd timer is anything but accurate.
2. Small items, like ankle socks will sometimes end up in the space near the door gasket so you have wring them out.
3. When the cycle is finished, the machine keeps buzzing at you repeatedly. I would prefer one 'ding" or "honk" or whatever and then be done with it.
Overall, I am happy with the machine. It is way way better than the top loading antique we were using!!!

Best Hand Clothes Wringer Review

Best Hand Clothes Wringer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you have tried hand wringing wet clothes, than you know its a tough burden--and you never reallly can hand wring wet clothes out enough so they will dry in a reasonable time.
After you use this product you will think your prayers have been answered!
My wife and I tested this product before we wouild really need it during a critical incident (extended power outage, EMP strike, etc).
First of all, credits to the Amazon vendor Get Prepared Store as they had the product shipped protected and in excellent condition via UPS. The package came with minor assemblly instructions, as the only tools needed is a flat blade screw driver and plyers.
The Best Hand Clothes Wringer (BHCW) worked perfectly. BHCW ajusts to fit most washtubs--we tried both, a square washtub and an oval washtub. The wringer is fully adjustable to suit the degree of wetness (amount of water squeezed from the clothes) the operator desires. The hand crank turns relatively easy, too.
As stated above, the two (2) clamps on the bottom of BHCW pivot to accomodate most washtubs in thickness and angles--and are relative sturdy and easy to clamp down on the washtub and remove from the washtub. The clamps are designed as to not puncture the mostly flimsy wash tubs they make today.
BHCW is made sturdy and looks built to last. The rollers are made of what looks and feels like a soft-touch, but firm polyurethane material--probably to help protect more delicate clothing.
Working with the Best Hand Clothes Wringer reminded me of days gone by, watching my mother wash our clothes the old fashioned way and using a wringer of similar type.
But the "old fashioned way" may be back sooner than you think.
Are you ready?

Nobody likes wet clothes. That's why we sell a hand wringer that removes 90 percent of the water depending on the fabric or clothes type. Spin dry or automatic washers remove as little as 45 percent. Ask for our hand clothes wringer. It's great for bulky items such as wringing towels and chamois. It's great for thin items too (adjustable squeeze rollers). For jeans and other uneven clothes items you'll find success but understand that not as much water can be wringed out from such items where the pockets and other doubled fabric combine.Use it at work, garages, car washes, motels, swimming pools, hospitals and your home. Longer life to clothes, chamois, towels, bathing suits, etc.Virtually indestructible, the hand wringer has a rustproof, all-steel frame, steel tube handle, and zinc plated finish. Hard maple bearings never need oil. A single, adjustable screw applies pressure at center of a flat, tempered steel spring. So pressure is balanced over entire length of wringing roller.Attach to stationary tub, portable tubs, round wash tubs, square wash tubs or oval wash tubs. Clamps open to 1 3/4".The wringer's metal frame size is 15.5" wide. With the crank handle attached it extends the length to 29". The frame height is 8.5" but extends to 10.25" counting the tension screw knob on top. The metal frame is 2" deep with a 6" drip tray the slides into the frame under the rollers. The usable inside width is 11.25" from one side of the roller to the other. Weighs about 15 lbs assembled.Great for wringing chamois or wringing towels too. The best hand wringer available and good stuff to get prepared.Note: Shipping to Alaska & Hawaii requires additional postage. ENERGY STAR qualified to meet the Department of Energy standards for energy efficiency.
Direct Inject Wash System
Prior to the start of wash cycles, a highly concentrated dose of detergent is injected into fabrics.
Works to penetrate stains and pre-treat soil.
Only when the entire load has been treated with the concentrated cleaning lather does the wash cycle begin.
6th Sense Technology
As soon as the wash cycle is started, washers use various sensors to determine the size of the load and precisely how much water is needed to clean it.
Heat sensors then monitor the temperature, and make sure water is warmed gradually to make cleaning enzymes optimally effective.
Suds sensors also work to prevent over sudsing in the low water wash system.
Care Control Temperature Management
Adjusts the cold and hot water inlets to reach temperatures that are warm enough to dissolve detergents.
But kept from overheating to help reduce shrinking and/or color bleeding.
Quiet Wash Plus Noise Reduction System
Keep operational sounds inside the washer and out of living areas with sound-absorbing materials around the wash basket of the drum.

Our old washing machine broke a couple of months ago; and, even though we could have fixed it, we decided it was time to go with a new front loader instead. The main reason we wanted front loading machines was because of the space savings when stacked. After a week of research, we settled on either this LG model or the comparable Samsung, based on reading pretty much every review we could find - we settled on the LG because of price.
Aside from the fact that these are extremely heavy compared to our old top loaders, the installation was fairly straight forward. The water hoses are a couple of feet longer than a typical washer hose (even other front loaders), which was great for us since we ended up stacking them a few feet from the water inputs. They are also very easy to setup and use.
At first we were a bit nervous about the height of the machines when stacked, but those fears were completely unfounded. I'm 5'9" and I can access both the washer and dryer with ease. The washer tub is actually tilted upward to make it easier to access when it's sitting on the floor instead of a stand. As a quick reference, if you're worried about the height, the bottom of the dryer opening sits at 54" when stacked, the center of the dryer control knob sits at 76", and the top of the dryer is at 79".
Aside from the obvious space savings, here are the things we've really liked about this washer:
1) It runs very quietly with no noticeable vibration. I was worried about this after reading reviews for other front loaders, but it hasn't been a problem at all - even with both the washer & dryer stacked and running at the same time.
2) It gets our clothes at least as clean as our old washer ever did; but it uses a lot less water to do it. (It's supposed to be easier on the clothes too, but I have no way to verify that.)
3) The controls are intuitive and easy to use.
4) We can fit an amazing amount in each load. Our old washer was a high capacity top loader, but this thing can probably clean almost twice as many clothes in each load. It is especially nice when it comes time to clean bedding that didn't even fit in the old washer.
5) I love the load sense feature. This is one of the things you should read the manual to figure out how to use; but it is definitely worth the effort. Basically, it tells you how much detergent you need to add in order to get the clothes clean for that particular load - I use it to tell me when the load is full by just adding clothes until it says I need the full amount of deterget:). It really does eliminate a lot of guess-work.
As usual, there are some things I wish I could change:
1) You can't use powder detergent with liquid bleach in the same load. You need to have either powder or liquid for both.
2) The controls don't remember settings, which can be a bit irritating since we use the same settings 95% of the time. Luckily they are easy to set, but you do need to reprogram it every time you turn it on.
3) The washer door only opens one way (the hinge is on the left), which is great if that's the way you need it to open. In our case, it opened the wrong way so we had to rearrange the room a bit. Fortunately, the long hoses made it possible to rearrange everything without a lot of extra effort or expense.
Another thing I had read about the front loaders was that the door needs to be left open between loads. I thought this would be a pain, but it really hasn't been a big deal at all. The manual doesn't actually recommend doing that; but says to periodically run a tub clean cycle (I think it says to do it every month) to eliminate any odor. I figure I'll leave the door open as well just to be safe.
Overall we are extremely pleased with these. I guess time will tell if they hold up as well as our old top loader did, but so far I'm pretty confident that they will. I highly recommend these if you're looking for a new washer and dryer.

Samsung WF210ANW 4 cu. Ft. High Efficiency Front-Load Washer - White
Average Reviews:

Purchased this locally, but sharing this review in case it is useful to anyone else. Even when I don't buy item on Amazon, I always appreciate the information that others share as I try to make purchase decisions.
This unit replaces a 12-y.o Whirlpool top-loader, which had some mechanical difficulties that made for loud operation. Right up front, the sound level is an amazing improvement.
Design: Attractive, clean lines, clear display. I like the front-load configuration, with some qualifiers. First, without the separate pedestal, you need to lean down, squat, or kneel to see deeply into the drum. Not bad, but a change from top-loader. Second, as dallas7 already noted, the access panel to clean the filter is near the floor, so without the pedestal, there will not be a lot of space for a pan under the drain hose. I don't find those things upsetting, and at some point may consider adding the optional pedestal, because I think the storage would help to organize my laundry room.
The door hinge is on the left side as you face the unit, and cannot be changed. This is likely to be best if your laundry room has washer on left and dryer on right. When I pull laundry out of top-loader, entangled pieces may fall back into tub. With front-loader, entangled items are more likely to drape toward the floor. Putting a laundry basket beneath the door would be practical to keep clean clothing off the floor (on any front-loader, I suspect). When I open the door after a wash load, a few drops of water fall from the door. Not a problem for us, but noting in case it matters to someone.
Operation: The washer senses load size. There are cycles for permanent press, heavy duty, normal, rinse & spin, quick wash, and delicate. As you turn the dial to select among these, lights show you what wash/rinse temp, spin speed, and soil level will apply for each. You can customize these options, and can save a custom configuration as "my cycle." You cannot set load size, which is a change from old machine. There's a child lock, implemented by pressing a two-button combination, and also a pause function to allow the door to be opened part way through the cycle. There is a digital display of time remaining in the cycle.
Performance: I've run 3 loads. I like the machine. I obviously can't comment on whether it will last 20 years, but I can tell you how it operated for me. First load, 12 pairs of adult jeans and a single-thickness sweat shirt, run on heavy duty. When machine was started, it displayed 1:30 run time. After it finished sensing, it upgraded the run time to 2:07. I'd read reviews that indicated that front-loaders use less water, and one reviewer complained that the machine did not fully soak the laundry. This was not my experience at all. I watched for awhile (yes, pulled up a seat and watched the dirty clothing go 'round). Clothing was thoroughly wet and pieces mixed while they cycled. As noted, operation was very quiet and there was no observable vibration. It ran very nicely.
Reviews on another site noted the improved spin efficiency, with less water left in laundry. This seemed to be true. Clothing was not drippy. More notably, I placed the load in the same dryer I've been using. Today, the seams and waistbands were not still cool or damp when the dryer buzzed. They dried completely, and the only change was the washer. I did not time the dryer cycle, but I run on moisture sensing, rather than timed, so it may also have run a shorter cycle.
Ran the second load on "normal." I think it started with a 58 minute run time predicted and it did not increase after the sensing cycle. The third load, towels, started with a 1:30 heavy duty cycle time and also did not increase. It appears that the machine noted the heavy load of jeans and adjusted, but otherwise ran default times.
Maintenance: I am pleased that the filter is accessible. That was not the case on old machine, and I think it is a good idea. I understand that I should run a "clean" cycle with a cleaner/freshener about once a month. Cleaning and odor seem to be a concern with front-loaders. I'm hoping that preventive maintenance will keep this from being a problem. Also considering leaving door open to dry for a few hours after last cycle.
I'm pleased so far. I paid a good bit less than the listed price here (search on "samsung wf210" for comparisons). Found a sale at one place that was ship-to-store, but was able to get price match at a local place that had in stock, with free next-day delivery, hook-up, and haul away of old unit. For the amount of the difference, I'd definitely recommend checking that option.
Hope that is some help. I really appreciate all the product information I have collected from this community over the years, thanks!

HAIER 1.8CF Combo Washer-Dryer White Review

This washer/dryer has changed my life. OK, that might be a little overly dramatic, but now i just walk into the bathroom, throw my clothes in and have them come out super clean and (usually, mostly) dry, instead of lugging loads up and down several flights of stairs to find that someone else was already using the sketchy machines that stained and burned my clothes and ate my quarters.
The front loading washer gets clothes much cleaner than standard top loading agitator machines, like other HE machines, the wash cycles takes longer than standard top loaders.
The condensation dryer works surprisingly well, the '2 hour autodry' usually finishes in less than 2 hours and if the load is as small as they reccommend everything is dry. however, i tend to fill the machine with what it can hold to wash (for two adults and a 10 month old) and even then almost everything is dry, i just usually throw towels or jeans or anything else that's still wet back in for another cycle (15-30 mins usually) and they are dry too. To cut down on wrinkles I only use the 60 minute cycle and take the clothes out hot and steamy and line dry them for another 30min - hour or so. But the machine also has a touch up cycle so if something comes out really wrinkled you can just throw it back in for a few minutes by itself.
For me, being able to do small loads is a luxury i didn't have when i had to pay for every load in coin-op machines, and with a small child it is a necessity if you have any hope of removing stains before they set in. I have had to change my laundry habits, i do a load or two almost every day, or every other day, instead of waiting for everything i own to pile up for 3-4 weeks! and it's easy to do, because it's just right there in the bathroom and i don't need any quarters!
We ended up just unscrewing the tub spout and with a couple of connectors they helped us find at the hardware store we were able to screw the y connector directly onto the pipe coming out of the wall. I just turn on the hot or cold water before i start the machine. Since i wash so frequently we just leave the hoses connected, we really only use the shower anyways and have a handheld showerhead. We also drain into the bathtub with an old pantyhose tied around the outlet hose to catch all the lint, etc. so it doesn't clog the drain.
I can't say enough good things about this machine! I've only had it about 4 months though, hopefully it will hold up well.

It's a great machine but you can save four hundred bucks by buying an IQ-Touch instead. There is nothing a Wave-Touch can do that an IQ-Touch can not. The Wave-Touch has 4 distinguishing features over the IQ:
1. The Wave spins at 1350 vs. the IQ's 1200 rpm. No big deal. I don't think there's any practical difference in the amount of water extracted that will make a real dent in the drying time.
2. The Wave has an "Active Wear" cycle. It's not something you'd ever miss if your machine did not have it in the first place. You can use the IQ's "Casual wear" cycle instead, which differs from the Active Wear cycle by only 5 minutes.
3. The Wave's options are hidden in tedious to use menus and submenus, instead of the IQ's simple to use buttons. Buttons win here because you can see at a glance what options are active, especially useful for the next time you use the washer. With the Wave-Touch's menu style you'll be forced to scroll through the menus to see what options have been selected.
4. Wave-Touch has 3 favorites memory buttons vs. one favortie for the IQ-Touch. I have yet to find this feature useful. When one is useless to me, having 3 doesn't make it any better.
Construction-wise the two machines are otherwise identical.
Conclusion: The Wave costs $300 to $400 more than the IQ and delivers the same level of performance as the IQ. The Wave is for people who have money to burn. Okay, with a bit of sheepishness I have to admit I did buy a Wave instead of an IQ.
Now, let me review the Wave with steam function, since that's the one I actually bought.
The machine is exceedingly quiet when washing. The only real noise comes during the spin cycles.
As for vibration, make sure you balance the machine using a good quality level and follow the leveling instructions. Read the manual and it's imperative that the shipping bolts be removed per the instructions before using the machine!!! My house has a crawl space. My laundry room is on the first floor, where the washer would be perfectly capable of transmitting vibration if it was not leveled properly. So far it's been very smooth, in fact much smoother than my previous top-loader, with hardly much of any vibration. Keep in mind that every load is different and each load has its own vibration and noise characteristics. Some loads will be vibration free, other loads with a very unbalanced load (pillows and comforters, for example) will have some vibration. If it vibrates at all it's almost always during the spin up and spin down phase of the spin cycle. Once it actually gets into the spin cycle, there is usually little vibration.
This washer is quite ingenious in fighting vibration by ramping up to full spin speed in incremental stages. During the first stage, it slowly rotates the wet load counterclock-wise to test for balance, and also to pump out water. If it detects even the slightest hint of an unbalanced load, it will stop and reverse direction, i.e. spin clockwise, at the same slow rpm to let the clothes to shuffle in the drum. After a few seconds of this clockwise spin, it reverses direction again, i.e. counter-clockwise again, it then tests for balance again. If it again detects a poor balance, it will keep on doing this reversing direction routine until it redistributes the load evenly. When it's finally satisfied that the balance is good, it will then launch into high spin speeds in several stages. Frequently, after it has launched into a higher speed, it detects unacceptable vibration. It will instantly abort the spin and perform the shuffling routine again and again until it gets the balance right. It's not uncommon for it to go back and forth many times for as long as 5 minutes to find the sweet spot. As more water is progressively pumped out and the load becoming progressively lighter and better balanced, it will proceed to the next higher speed, finally maxing out at 1350 rpm, during the last 2 minutes of the spin cycle.
As for the steam feature, I've yet to find definitive evidence that it's the steam itself that gets the dirt out. The steam cycle essentially adds 20 minutes of wash time to any wash cycle using either warm water or hot water. Maybe it's the extra 20 minutes of washing in warm water in the steam cycle that does the trick. It's hard to tell.
It washes loose clothing very well while using little water. By "loose clothing," I mean items that are somewhat small and that will wet easily and shrink in volume as they are wetted. Items with these characteristics can freely tumble around one another inside the drum, as long as the machine is not overloaded. However when it comes to washing bulky big loads, such as pillows and synthetic fiber comforters, synthetic fiber bedspreads, etc., its miserliness in water use is its biggest flaw. With these bulky items, the water level is woefully inadequate to thoroughly wet the interior mass. And because they are synthetic fiber items, they don't shrink much in volume even when wetted, so they don't have much room to rotate inside the drum. The same side of the pillow or comforter then faces the drum and the center side doesn't ever get enough water. So, the side facing the drum surface gets cleaned but the center side doens't get cleaned. I bought this washer specifically to wash big bulky items such as pillows and synthetic fiber comforters, so it's a bit disappointing that it doesn't clean these items well. The way to get around this problem is to pause the machine after it's finished filling, and add water on your own either through the door or through the detergent tray. It works. Adding about 1 to 2 gallons of hot water fixes the problem.
I still love the washer, but only wish it had a "bulky items" selection which would allow it to have more water during the wash cycle. I believe this problem with washing bulky items is endemic to all high effiency front load washers and not just Electrolux. The real wish is to allow a separate button to vary the water level, like that found on my old Kenmore top-loader, but I don't think we'll ever see that water level selection switch on these high efficiency washers. I think the Electrolux designers' hands were tied by the stringent Federal energy efficiency standards.
