BOSCH Vision Washer/Dryer Laundry Pedestal with Storage Drawer - Review

I should preface this by saying that I think all of these laundry pedestals are horribly overpriced. That said, here's my thoughts:
We picked a pair of these up for our 4 year old Maytag Neptune front loaders about a month ago. They are constructed of metal frames and are nice and sturdy. The drawer is made of a heavy-ish plastic material and feels pretty solid. We passed on getting the matching Neptune pedestals back in 2006 when we bought the Maytag's (and to think they were only $110 each back then!). My wife recently decided that it might be nice to have the washer and dryer sit higher so that she didn't have to bend down as much to get the laundry in/out (can't say I blame her). We lucked out and found these at Lowe's on sale for $49 each, so we just had to get them even though they were Bosch and not Maytag. My wife LOVES the new height of the washer/dryer now. I've heard from her several times now tell me that she's fallen back in love with her laundry. Since I was mounting these to a set of Maytag's, they were not "plug and play". What I ended up doing was to use a large section of cardboard and make a stencil of the existing mounting points on the bottom of the Maytag's and then transfer those locations over to the Bosch pedestals. Once I had the location of the new mounting holes marked, I drilled new holes into the top of the pedestals for the Maytag's to mount to. I was able to use the new washing machine mounting bolts that Bosch supplied but had to improvise and use sheet metal screws for the dryer. It's been about a month since these were installed and we have had no issues so far.

This combo unit is amazing!!! With a very small home, this is great for a small space having an all in one washer dryer unit. It does take a while longer than the traditional washer and dryer setup, however it is worth the extra time.
My favorite features:
Uses less water (12-14 gallons) versus the top load washer I just replaced.
Uses a 110v outlet, so now I can get rid of the bulky dryer vent and the 240V outlet for the dryer I just replaced.
Spins VERY quickly which makes cloths damp not wet like the top load washer we replaced.
When finished, the unit "sings" at you. It plays a cute little jingle!
Gets the cloths VERY clean.
My only negative:
Socks take a bit to dry.
It took us a while to find one, Home Depot ordered it for us.
When we move, I will definitley purchase another one or I will take this with me. I am so impressed by the quality and how nice it is to have it all wrapped into one unit. Its the same size as a regular front load washer.

Please Note: The Washer/Dryer Combo takes up to 6 hours to wash and dry your clothing Is It A Washer? Or Something Better? This combination washer/dryer is perfect if you don't have an external venting source, which conventional dryers require, and it runs on standard voltage electricity. Although it is a space-efficient laundry solution, ideal for locations where a separate washer and dryer wouldn't fit, the full-size tub (4.2 cu. ft.) means you won't be compromising on washing capacity. Wash in peace You shouldn't know your washer is on from the next room. The LG TrueBalance anti-vibration system is designed to minimize washer noise and vibration for smooth, quiet performance in any room of the house - even on the 2nd floor. More free time Towers of towels, piles of sweatshirts, and a mountain of jeans? Go for it. The extra-large capacity (4.2 cu. ft.) tub lets you do more laundry in fewer loads. That's time saved and sore backs avoided. Super clean Some stains are so nasty it's hard to imagine how they'll ever come out. LG's NSF-certified Sanitary Cycle heats water up to 158F to remove the toughest stains and bacteria. Count on it When you buy a washer, you don't want to worry that it won't last. Because the Direct Drive Motor uses fewer moving parts and operates more efficiently, LG confidently backs the motor with a 10-year warranty. No need to vent Dry your clothes without any need for external venting. Now you can enjoy the value and quality of an LG washer even if you have limited space. After 5 years of 'hating' my Whirlpool Duet frontloaders, I got rid of them and after MUCH research (probably 20 hours) decided on this set. I found negative comments on every set I researched. Negative comments whether you're researching front or top loaders. My towels are RUINED from the mold smell of my frontloader. NEVER again will I own one of them. I had to go with the machines that had the least of downside. Downside of this one? It SPINS so dry it wrinkles. So.....just give a good hard shake BEFORE putting in the dryer, and the wrinkles come out. The dryer is finished drying WAY before a 'normal' load is done washing. With my 'Duets'....I had to dry for 80-90 minutes, and Whirlpool could never find a reason for the problem. This set of machines, typically dries in 30 minutes! My typical wash load is for 50min with the selection I'm using. Everyone that came to visit me (thats close enough to me to tell me the truth) HATED using my 'frontloaders'. I ALWAYS had to RE-WASH my husbands food stained shirts, second time around being sure to 'pre-soak' them. NOT with my Maytag Bravos TopLoaders! They're clean the first time around. I do have to make myself remember to 'push' the "OxiClean" button for the Borax I'm using in the separate dispenser. Otherwise its still sitting there dry and unused. I love the huge size too! I'm so happy with them I could become a professional wash-woman!! Haha....

It's a great machine but you can save four hundred bucks by buying an IQ-Touch instead. There is nothing a Wave-Touch can do that an IQ-Touch can not. The Wave-Touch has 4 distinguishing features over the IQ:
1. The Wave spins at 1350 vs. the IQ's 1200 rpm. No big deal. I don't think there's any practical difference in the amount of water extracted that will make a real dent in the drying time.
2. The Wave has an "Active Wear" cycle. It's not something you'd ever miss if your machine did not have it in the first place. You can use the IQ's "Casual wear" cycle instead, which differs from the Active Wear cycle by only 5 minutes.
3. The Wave's options are hidden in tedious to use menus and submenus, instead of the IQ's simple to use buttons. Buttons win here because you can see at a glance what options are active, especially useful for the next time you use the washer. With the Wave-Touch's menu style you'll be forced to scroll through the menus to see what options have been selected.
4. Wave-Touch has 3 favorites memory buttons vs. one favorite for the IQ-Touch. I have yet to find this feature useful. When one is useless to me, having 3 doesn't make it any better.
Construction-wise the two machines are otherwise identical.
Conclusion: The Wave costs $300 to $400 more than the IQ and delivers the same level of performance as the IQ. The Wave is for people who have money to burn. Okay, with a bit of sheepishness I have to admit I did buy a Wave instead of an IQ because I wanted all the bells and whistles regardless of cost or functionality. I don't recommend others to follow my lead.
Now, let me review the Wave with steam function, since that's the one I actually bought.
The machine is exceedingly quiet when washing. The only real noise comes during the spin cycles.
As for vibration, make sure you balance the machine using a good quality level and follow the leveling instructions. Read the manual and it's imperative that the shipping bolts be removed per the instructions before using the machine!!! My house has a crawl space. My laundry room is on the first floor, where the washer would be perfectly capable of transmitting vibration if it was not leveled properly. So far it's been very smooth, in fact much smoother than my previous top-loader, with hardly much of any vibration. Keep in mind that every load is different and each load has its own vibration and noise characteristics. Some loads will be vibration free, other loads with a very unbalanced load (pillows and comforters, for example) will have some vibration. If it vibrates at all it's almost always during the spin up and spin down phase of the spin cycle. Once it actually gets into the spin cycle, there is usually little vibration.
This washer is quite ingenious in fighting vibration by ramping up to full spin speed in incremental stages. During the first stage, it slowly rotates the wet load counterclock-wise to test for balance, and also to pump out water. If it detects even the slightest hint of an unbalanced load, it will stop and reverse direction, i.e. spin clockwise, at the same slow rpm to let the clothes to reshuffle in the drum. After a few seconds of this clockwise spin, it reverses direction again, i.e. counter-clockwise again, it then tests for balance again. If it again detects a poor balance, it will keep on doing this reversing direction routine until it redistributes the load evenly. When it's finally satisfied that the balance is good, it will then launch into high spin speeds in several stages. Frequently, after it has launched into a higher speed, it detects unacceptable vibration. It will instantly abort the spin and perform the shuffling routine again and again until it gets the balance right. It's not uncommon for it to go back and forth many times for as long as 5 minutes to find the sweet spot. As more water is progressively pumped out and the load becoming progressively lighter and better balanced, it will proceed to the next higher speed, finally maxing out at 1350 rpm, during the last 2 minutes of the spin cycle.
As for the steam feature, I've yet to find definitive evidence that it's the steam itself that gets the dirt out. The steam cycle essentially adds 20 minutes of wash time to any wash cycle using either warm water or hot water. Maybe it's the extra 20 minutes of washing in warm water in the steam cycle that does the trick. It's hard to tell.
It washes loose clothing very well while using little water. By "loose clothing," I mean items that are somewhat small and that will wet easily and shrink in volume as they are wetted. Items with these characteristics can freely tumble around one another inside the drum, as long as the machine is not overloaded. However when it comes to washing bulky big loads, such as pillows and synthetic fiber comforters, synthetic fiber bedspreads, etc., its miserliness in water use is its biggest flaw. With these bulky items, the water level is woefully inadequate to thoroughly wet the interior mass. And because they are synthetic fiber items, they don't shrink much in volume even when wetted, so they don't have much room to rotate inside the drum. The same side of the pillow or comforter then faces the drum and the center side doesn't ever get enough water. So, the side facing the drum surface gets cleaned but the center side doens't get cleaned. I bought this washer specifically to wash big bulky items such as pillows and synthetic fiber comforters, so it's a bit disappointing that it doesn't clean these items well. The way to get around this problem is to pause the machine after it's finished filling, and add water on your own either through the door or through the detergent tray. It works. Adding about 1 to 2 gallons of hot water fixes the problem.
I still love the washer, but only wish it had a "bulky items" selection which would allow it to have more water during the wash cycle. I believe this problem with washing bulky items is endemic to all high effiency front load washers and not just Electrolux. The real wish is to allow a separate button to vary the water level, like that found on my old Kenmore top-loader, but I don't think we'll ever see that water level selection switch on these high efficiency washers. I think the Electrolux designers' hands were tied by the stringent Federal energy efficiency standards.

HAIER 1.8CF Combo Washer-Dryer White Review

This washer/dryer has changed my life. OK, that might be a little overly dramatic, but now i just walk into the bathroom, throw my clothes in and have them come out super clean and (usually, mostly) dry, instead of lugging loads up and down several flights of stairs to find that someone else was already using the sketchy machines that stained and burned my clothes and ate my quarters.
The front loading washer gets clothes much cleaner than standard top loading agitator machines, like other HE machines, the wash cycles takes longer than standard top loaders.
The condensation dryer works surprisingly well, the '2 hour autodry' usually finishes in less than 2 hours and if the load is as small as they reccommend everything is dry. however, i tend to fill the machine with what it can hold to wash (for two adults and a 10 month old) and even then almost everything is dry, i just usually throw towels or jeans or anything else that's still wet back in for another cycle (15-30 mins usually) and they are dry too. To cut down on wrinkles I only use the 60 minute cycle and take the clothes out hot and steamy and line dry them for another 30min - hour or so. But the machine also has a touch up cycle so if something comes out really wrinkled you can just throw it back in for a few minutes by itself.
For me, being able to do small loads is a luxury i didn't have when i had to pay for every load in coin-op machines, and with a small child it is a necessity if you have any hope of removing stains before they set in. I have had to change my laundry habits, i do a load or two almost every day, or every other day, instead of waiting for everything i own to pile up for 3-4 weeks! and it's easy to do, because it's just right there in the bathroom and i don't need any quarters!
We ended up just unscrewing the tub spout and with a couple of connectors they helped us find at the hardware store we were able to screw the y connector directly onto the pipe coming out of the wall. I just turn on the hot or cold water before i start the machine. Since i wash so frequently we just leave the hoses connected, we really only use the shower anyways and have a handheld showerhead. We also drain into the bathtub with an old pantyhose tied around the outlet hose to catch all the lint, etc. so it doesn't clog the drain.
I can't say enough good things about this machine! I've only had it about 4 months though, hopefully it will hold up well.

Samsung WF520ABP 5 cu. Ft. Front-Load Washer - Stainless Platinum Review

Samsung WF520ABP 5 cu. Ft. Front-Load Washer - Stainless Platinum

This is Samsung's new line of high-end front-loading laundry machine. Other than the new Electrolux EWFLS70JIW 27 5.1 cu. Ft. Front-Load Washer - Island White, it has the largest capacity among consumer-oriented washers. Yet, its external dimension is similar to other front-loaders, thus fitting easily into standard laundry room space.
I bought this model to replace a 7-year-old Whirlpool : WFW9400SZ 27 Front Load Washer with 4.0 cu. ft. Capacity White/Sapphire Blue, which went kaput when the plastic ring holding the front side of the steel drum in place decayed away under normal usage. Understandably, I chose not to go with Whirlpool again, since many of the Duet's plastic parts have not lasted the 10-15 years I expected from a major appliance. I am not sure how well this Samsung will compare, but I feel it is worth a try even at a relatively high price because Consumer Reports likes this model.
Functionally, it is almost identical to the Duet. The major exceptions are:
1. A substantially larger capacity;
2. The ability to sense the load and adjust water usage automatically;
3. The availability of steam wash.
The first two features are very nice. The last one is questionable, as I consider high temperature a killer to most fabric, but steam seems the new trend in washers.
I bought it from BestBuy. The installers rushed through the job and failed to apply Teflon tape when connecting the hose, leading to a leak that ruined the wall, the hard-wood floor and the basement ceiling tiles. I should have supervised the installation personally. Nowadays, it is unwise to assume professionalism in people one does not know well.
The follow-up with BestBuy's customer service has been hellish. The corporate consumer relation people are nice and polite, but every time they try to hand me off to the local installation department I get a total disconnect, literally, as in being hanged up on. So, after more than a dozen phone calls and several hours on the phone, resolution is still in the air.
